Salmon & Shark Tagging in Alaska
In July & August of 2000, I travelled to Prince William Sound, Alaska to photograph a National Marine Fisheries Service research program. They were tagging and releasing Salmon sharks to gain an understanding of their movement patterns.

After two weeks on the boat, I flew to Kodiak Island to shoot salmon. The only problem was the Pink salmon run was two weeks late. So, while I waited, I photographed a great minus tide sequence and Kodiak’s abundant marine life. The salmon finally arrived and I shot until my hands turned blue.
salmon shark tagging
Very little is known about the biology of Alaska's Salmon sharks. This first-of-its-kind study hopes to shed some light on the animal's population, range and behavior.

A live shark is caught in a purse seine net, measured, weighed and fitted with a satellite transmitter. It is then released unharmed so we can "see" its movements.
