Sea Turtles in Florida
In May of 2000, I photographed the Loggerhead sea turtles nesting at night on the beaches of Florida. I returned in September to catch the little guys hatching out and making a break for the open ocean.

On both trips I was lucky enough to spend time with Larry Wood, head of the Marinelife Center of Juno Beach. They do excellent sea turtle research, rehabilitation and public education. I was able to photograph Loggerhead, Green and Leatherback hatchlings.

A female Loggerhead turtle may travel over 1000 miles to lay her eggs on a Florida beach. At night, she exerts great effort to dig a nest in the sand and deposit over 100, ping-pong ball shaped, eggs.

Most sea turtle species are endangered. Millions used to roam the open ocean. They were harvested almost to the brink of extinction for their meat and eggs. Now, they are threatened by loss of nesting habitat and drowning in fishing nets.
